The Role of the School Nurse
Secondary schools within Oxfordshire have a named NHS School Health Nurse. The aim of the School Nurse is to offer evidence-based, accessible and preventative health care for children and young people. Our School Health Nurse, Ms. Ruth Vilella, works closely with other professionals and school staff to support students to be both physically and emotionally healthy, to make informed healthy lifestyle choices and to improve physical and emotional health in order that they reach their full potential.

The School Nurse Service
The School Nurse provides public health interventions as follows:
- Someone to talk to confidentially about health addressing issues such as physical, emotional and sexual health and general well-being.
- Immunisations.
- Offers advice and support concerning healthy lifestyle choices such as keeping safe, substance misuse, quitting smoking, exercise, dental health and diet.
- Provides teaching sessions and supports teachers with delivery of PSHE.
- Provides information and guidance to specialist services which may be able to support you.
- Offers a confidential School Nurse drop-in clinic.
If we cannot help, we will find someone who can.

How can I make an appointment to see the School Nurse during term time?
- Students can pop along to the regular drop-in clinic on Wednesdays at lunchtime (other drop-in sessions are advertised weekly outside the Nurse's office).
- Speak to your tutor, Head of Year or Student Services to help with making an appointment.
- Self-refer by dropping in or send and email (contact details below).
- Teachers, Heads of Year, Assistant Heads of Year or another health professional may also ask the School Nurse to review a student’s health by completing and returning a short referral form.
- The School Nurse may also contact students via a slip from Reception.
The School Nursing service is confidential. This means you can discuss personal information with us and we will not discuss it with anyone else without your permission, unless we feel that you or another may be at risk of harm. If information needs to be shared we will always try to discuss this with you first so that you know why, and what will happen.

If you need to contact the School Nursing team during the school holidays, please call: The City School Nursing Team on: 01865 904225 during office hours.
The School Nursing Service is not an emergency service. If students’ are in need of immediate nursing or medical help, please contact a member of staff on site who will locate a member of staff trained in first aid. If students’ are off site in the case of an emergency, please call 999.

You can also download copies of each of the consent forms which can be printed and completed ready for your immunisation session if you cannot find the copy given to you to take home.
